Want waterfront living within reach of Richmond? Chesdin Landing on Lake Chesdin is one of the best options in the region. I toured it to show you what around $1 million buys on the water.

The lake

Lake Chesdin covers about 3,100 acres with more than 340 miles of shoreline. It was formed in 1968 when the Brasfield Dam was built on the Appomattox River. Chesdin Landing has roughly 5.8 miles of that shoreline, with deep water for boating, jet skiing, kayaking and largemouth bass fishing.

The homes and lots

• Home sizes: generally 2,800 to more than 7,000 square feet, with 4 to 6 bedrooms and luxury finishes.
• Lot sizes: 1 to 4+ acres in mature hardwoods. That's unusually large for a planned community.
• Architecture: custom builds, executive estates and newer construction in craftsman, traditional and transitional styles.

Price range

Lots and smaller off-water builds sometimes start in the high $400Ks to mid $500Ks. Median sales tend to fall between about $800K and $1.2M, depending on water or golf frontage.

Amenities

Chesdin Landing started in the late 1990s as a master-planned golf and waterfront community, designed for about 750 homes at full buildout. It's anchored by the 18-hole Chesdin Golf Club and also has a private club, a full-service restaurant, a community pool, a fitness center, tennis and pickleball courts, and walking trails. A newer phase adds 55+ homesites along the 17th and 18th fairways.
